(A) 용사 (勇士) in normal translations usually refers to "a brave person" or "warrior; veteran".
(B) 용자 (勇者) in normal translations means "a hero; brave soul; brave person; courageous person". The person is the opposite of a coward. These days it refers to the protagonists of works, particularly anime and manga, that save the world either confidently or reluctantly and this is usually called "hero"
Military: In the military, (A) 용사 is a title that is usually used to refer to "war veterans" (참전용사) or just a "old soldier" (역전의 용사)
Fantasy Works: In fantasy works, (A) 용사 is translated as "Hero". The 'hero' usually faces off against a "Demon King" (마왕) as a trope.
In some RPGs, the main character of the series is usually called a (A) '용사 ' which is translated as 'Hero'.
When 용사 is translated from Japanese in English speaking countries, (A) 용사 is usually translated as 'hero' or 'champion', but sometimes literally directly translated as 'brave'. The word 'brave' in not often used because it refers mainly to Native American warriors.
In Japan, there is a distinction between (A) 용사(勇士) and (B) 용자(勇者). 士 is used for soldiers who are dedicated to the country such as as "a samurai", whereas '者' is used in a similar fashion to "a wise man; sage" (현자 (賢者) or a "noble man" (군자 君子). In Korea, it is recommended to use only one synonym for indistinguishable meanings, so although '용자' is an expression that belongs to the standard language, it is not a word that is commonly used, so it is common practice for (B) 용자 to be translated as (A) 용사.
One recent trend in Korea is to view the 'Hero'(용사) as a kind of duty or job rather than a the character's intrinsic attribute or role in the story. The main character is not called a 'hero' because of his brave personality or performs heroic acts, but becomes a 'hero' by being 'appointed to the position of a hero', and as he is appointed as a hero, his status rises accordingly. The middle and the latter detailed above are such cases. However, recently, as the overflow of mass-produced type fantasy and concepts of the classic Japanese RPG hero are merged, the original meaning is has been flipped, and the hero becomes a supporting character or a villain that gets in the way of the actual main character of the series. The trend of criticising the 'hero' has become increasingly popular.
The different translations of (A) 용사 (勇士) and (B) 용자 (勇者) can be seen in the following fantasy works.
- The Rising of the Shield Hero (Korean: 방패 용사 성공담) (Kanji: 盾の勇者) (Hirgana: の成り上が)): Heroes (Korean: 용사 ) (Japanese: 勇者) are the main characters
- Maoyū: Maō Yūsha (Korean: 마오유우 마왕용사) (Lit: Demon King and Hero) (Japanese: まおゆう魔王勇者): The character Hero (Korean: 용사) (Kanji: 勇者) is the main character.
- Lord of the Rings Online (반지의 제왕 온라인): Champion (용사) is a playable class.
- The Devil is a Part-Timer! (Korean: 알바 뛰는 마왕님!) (Japanese: はたらく魔王さま!) (Lit: "Working Demon King!" or "Demon Lord at Work!): Emilia Justina is the Hero(용사) that defeated the Demon Lord.
- Half-Minute Hero (Korean: 용사 30) (Japanese: 勇者30): Hero (용사) is a playable character.
- Dragon Quest (드래곤 퀘스트): Hero (Korean: 용사 or 용자 ) (Japanese: 勇者) is a character class in the game. It is translated as both 'warrior' and 'hero'.
- Brave Series (Korean: ) (Japanese: 勇者シリーズ):
In Korean works generally, it is uncommon to distinguish between (A) 용사 and (B) 용자, but in Japanese games and mangas, they are distinct. A (A) 용사 are the heroes of previous and earlier generations. (B) 용자 is a direct lineage and the current protagonist can be regarded as this. According to the cliche, the hero is the strongest in that generation.
영웅 (英雄)[]
In Hardcore Leveling Warrior 영웅 is used throughout.
The Heroic/Hero Grade(영웅등급) is a grade. It appears in some skills names such as Hero's Steps(영웅의 발걸음), Hero's Body(영웅의 육체), Hero's Fist(영웅의 주먹), Heroize(영웅화), Hero's Ambition(영웅의 패기), Hero's Spirit(영웅의 기개 ) and Hero's Strikes(영웅의 난타). The Best Swordsman's Hero's Steps was called a 'Hero Type Exclusive Skills' (영웅형 전용스킬) in Season 2 Episode 89.
영웅 (英雄) simply means "hero". There is no other meaning.
전사 (戰士)[]
전사 literally means "warrior; fighter" or "soldier; combatant". So it means either a person who fights or a person who fights on the frontline.
In Hardcore Leveling Warrior, it is in Hardcore Leveling Warrior's name 열렙전사. In Season 2 Episode 105, Pea Beans is said to be a Tank-Type Warrior (탱커형 전사).
Examples in other fantasy series:
- Dungeons and Dragons: Fighter (파이터) class
- Dragon Quest: Warrior (전사) (戰士) class
- World of Warcraft: Warrior (전사) class
주인공 (主人公)[]
주인공 (主人公) means "protagonist; main character; leading character" in a work. it is sometimes translated as "hero; heroine".
In Season 2 Episode 59, it was said that Nightmare Akira had the 'Main Character Attribute' ('주인공' 특성, 'ju-ingong' teugseong).
In Season 2 Episode 75, Stone said "그래, 이 세계를 구원할 주인공, 용사 스톤님이시다!" which has both the 주인공 and 용사 words. LINE Webtoon translated this as "Yes, I'm Warrior Stone, the Hero to save this world!". A more literal translation is "Yeah, I'm the main character who will save this world, I'm Warrior Stone!". Stone is basically saying he is the hero/protagonist that will save Lucid Adventure.
